Maria Assumpta Girl’s High School is a Catholic mission school established by the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, located on Oguta/Mgbidi Road in Oguta, Imo State. The school’s inception dates back to January 10, 1962, when it was founded in response to the significant neglect of women’s education in the area. This initiative was led by Late Mrs. Pricilia Nwadiaro, a prominent women leader in the Sacred Heart Parish, who rallied local women to advocate for secondary education for girls.
The school was established with support from the community and the then Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. J. Crowley, who facilitated the clearing of land for the school. It became the first post-primary institution for girls in Oguta and its surroundings, with Rev. Sr. Mary Pauline from the Congregation of Assumpta Sisters in Ireland as the pioneer principal.
The school faced challenges during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, during which it was occupied by soldiers and later taken over by the East Central State government, which renamed it Oguta Girl’s High School. On January 3, 2011, it was returned to the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri and renamed Maria Assumpta Girl’s High School Oguta.
Today, Maria Assumpta Girl’s High School continues to uphold its mission of providing quality education and empowering young women in the community through academic excellence and moral training.
