Brief History of the School

The school is situated along Owerri Port Harcourt Road. It was founded in 1954 and established in 1955 by Reverend Mother Mary Catherine Laboure, a Holy Rosary Rev. Sister from Kileshandra Ireland. Mother Laboure became the first Principal of Owerri Girls’ Secondary School on January 2nd, 1955. In all, the School has had Seventeen (17) principals.

In 1997, there was a general takeover of Schools by the East Central State Government. In September 2010, the School was handed back to the Roman Catholic Church and Most Rev. Dr. AJV Obinna became the Proprietor of all Mission Schools.
Presently, Most Rev. Dr. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji is the proprietor of all Mission Schools.

Owerri Girls’ Secondary School has a population of over One Thousand Four Hundred students 1,400). It has well-equipped boarding houses and facilities. It has all science laboratories Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Introductory Technology. There is a well-equipped Virtual Learning and Interactive (VLI) center with Fifty-Six Computers. The school has competent and experienced teachers. Also, students are properly groomed in all-round education.
