Brief History of the School
Our Lady of Mount Carmel College, Emekuku, is a distinguished girls’ school that has been a beacon of educational excellence since its establishment in 1942. Over the past 81 years, the institution has consistently upheld its commitment to fostering academic achievement, moral integrity, spiritual growth, and cultural awareness among its students.
From its inception, the college has provided two essential forms of education: a Teacher Training College and a Secondary School. Initially founded and managed by the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary Congregation, the school was later taken over by the State Government during the administration of East Central State.
In 1999, under the leadership of Dr. (Mrs.) Pat Uche-Obasi (LSM), the school reverted to its original name, Our Lady of Mount Carmel College, Emekuku. The institution underwent significant changes in 2005 when it was divided into junior and senior secondary schools, but it was restructured into a single entity in 2010. That same year, the Imo State Government transferred ownership back to the Owerri Archdiocesan Catholic Church.
Since then, the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri has played a vital role in overseeing the administration and management of the college. This unique status has greatly contributed to the holistic education of young women, making the motto “That Decency and Knowledge May Prevail” a guiding principle in their development.
The college remains dedicated to nurturing young ladies who embody decency and knowledge in their actions and words.
